Guide
Manage permissions
Fine-tune exactly what one person can do beyond their role, or change what a role gets by default.
Before you start
- You need the Admin role to manage permissions.
- Find it under Settings, in Permissions.
Override a permission for one person
Open Permissions
Go to Settings, then Permissions. You will see every active member with their role and a status badge.
Open a member
Click a member to open their permissions, grouped by area: Members & Roles, Clients, Projects, Time, Invoices, and more.
Flip a permission
Toggle any permission on or off for that person. The toggle always shows the resolved value, what they can actually do right now, and an Overridden badge marks anything that differs from the role default.
Reset to default
Click Reset to default next to an overridden permission to clear it and go back to inheriting the role default.
Change what a role gets by default
Switch to Role defaults
On the Permissions page, switch from the Members tab to the Role defaults tab.
Pick a role
Choose Admin, Manager, or User to see and edit that role’s default permissions.
Flip a default
Toggle a permission on or off. Since this changes the default for everyone in that role who does not already have a personal override, WorkWiser shows you exactly how many people that is before you confirm.
Two layers, working together
Per-member overrides
Grant or revoke any individual permission for one person, regardless of their role. An override always wins over the role default. Each row shows whether it is overridden or inherited, and you can reset one permission, or all of a person’s overrides, back to the role default at any time.
Role defaults
What everyone in a role gets unless they have a personal override. Edit it once on the Role defaults tab and it applies to the whole role.
Good to know
WorkWiser always keeps at least one person who can manage permissions. An edit that would leave nobody with that access is refused, so you cannot lock your own team out.
Everyone can always open their own Profile and Preferences from the avatar menu. Each organization page, like Members & Roles, Organization, or Plan & Billing, is controlled by its own permission, so granting a single key opens just that page.
A permission change, whether a personal override or a role default, takes effect the moment you save. A member with the app already open picks it up on their next page load, no sign-out needed.
Teams come with two keys of their own: Manage teams (create and edit teams and their rosters, Admin by default) and Assign teams (put a team on a deliverable and run Sync, Admin and Manager by default). Grant either one individually like any other permission.
